Resemblance

Occasionally I come across characters from other media, and just can't escape the thought of "Hey! That person reminds me of Billy!" So here is a compilation of all the Billy-wannabes I've found. They can't be him, but maybe they can come close!

Billy and Norris (Chrono Cross)

Norris reminds me of Billy in a few ways. First of all, he's obviously a character whose weapon of choice is the gun. He's also pretty nerdy. :D But deeper than that, his story is somewhat similar. He works for an organization whose ideals he comes to find he doesn't agree with, although at first he's very dedicated to his job.

Billy and... Judecca? (Wild ARMS 2)

This is a pretty superficial resemblance, because basically I just think they kind of look alike. When I first played Wild ARMS 2 and saw Judecca, I thought, "Wow! He looks like Billy except older and bitter!" Well, something like that. Anyway, here's a rundown of the similarities I found due to my nature of overanalyzing everything.

1. Hair color. Judecca's is a bit more blue-ish, but hey, it works.
2. Guns! I like guns (for the purposes of cool video game characters anyway), they use guns. Yay!
3. I think they shop at the same store... kinda like the Mens Wearhouse except with funny cloak things.
4. What's with the cowboy boots?
5. Is it just me or do their clothes look a few sizes too big? Pants, especially.
6. Big cuff things on the sleeves. Very chic.
7. Did I say guns? Oh, I did. Well, they use two handguns, so guns! again!

Personality-wise though... not so much. Judecca is sadistic, merciless, and all that good villain stuff. Billy is... not. Although, if Billy had to deal with any more angsty situations, I could see him possibly becoming warped and Judecca-ish, so who knows?

Billy and Miles Edgeworth (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney)

This one is my favorite. As I played Phoenix Wright, I became ever more aware as the story progressed that Miles Edgeworth is Billy in a suit. ...An extremely purple one.

For one thing, their personalities are quite similar. Both have a difficulty expressing themselves properly to those they care about, and a rather "stuffy" attitude at times. They also both highly value doing what's right and have an almost zealous devotion to their jobs working for a governing body... that is at the beginning anyway.

Which brings me to the really interesting part. The events surrounding them in each game are almost identical. I can describe the happenings in their stories using identical paragraphs, only replacing each game's details as needed. Allow me to demonstrate. (Mind the spoilers, please!)

Billy's father, Jessie, and Isaac Stein are professional rivals. Jessie deals a great blow to Stein by winning the woman they both loved and command of Gebler. Stein has Billy's mother killed and blames someone else. Stein then takes Billy under his wing and pretends to be a caring mentor, all the while harboring an intense resentment towards him and his father, and turning Billy into a tool for his ultimate revenge against Jessie. Billy finds out in a shocking turn of events and defeats Stein. Stein blows up.

Miles' father, Gregory, and Manfred von Karma are professional rivals. Gregory deals a great blow to von Karma by being the only defense attorney to successfully accuse him of faulty prosecuting methods. Von Karma kills Gregory Edgeworth and blames someone else. Von Karma then takes Miles under his wing and pretends to be a caring mentor, all the while harboring an intense resentment towards him and his father, and turning Miles into a tool for his ultimate revenge against Gregory. Miles finds out in a shocking turn of events and defeats von Karma. Von Karma goes to jail.

So who came first, the Etone or the prosecutor? I honestly don't know because I don't remember what year the original Japanese version of Phoenix Wright (the one for GBA) was released, but Xenogears is 1997 in Japan. I don't think anyone sneakily stole the idea from someone else, it's just a bizarre coincidence. And even more bizarre that I liked Edgeworth even before I realized he was Billy's long-lost attorney brethren! Bizarre, yet awesome.
